Leonidas (“Son of a Lion”) and his fellow king Leotychidas (“Luck of a Lion”)—Sparta had two kings and tworoyal families—were the commanders- in-chief of all Greek forces fighting the Persians on land and sea.
Leonidas. Leonidas (540 BC – 480 BC) was a king of the Greek city-state of Sparta. He led theSpartan forces during the Second Persian War, and is remembered for his heroic death at the Battle of Thermopylae. He is resembled in many greek statues.

Resplendent in a crested Corinthian helmet, his face, which would have had inlaid eyes, depicts the grim determination for which the fallen king became a legend.
