Gorgo (/ ˈ ɡ ɔːr ɡ oʊ /; Greek: Γοργώ [ɡorɡɔ͜ɔ́]; fl. 480 BC) was a Spartan woman and wife to King Leonidas I (r. 489–480 BC). She was the daughter and the only known child of Cleomenes I, Leonidas' half-brother and King of Sparta (r. 520–490 BC). [1]

Gorgo eventually married Leonidas, her step-uncle, who succeeded to the Spartan throne ca. 490 BCE and Herodotus claims that Gorgo was the reason he was able to do so, as she inherited Cleomenes’ property upon his death and gave Leonidas greater claim (Hodkinson 1986, 395).
