The California Real Estate Exam is a state-specific test that prospective real estate agents must pass to obtain a license in California. It’s conducted by the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) and aims to ensure that licensees have the necessary knowledge and understanding of California real estate principles, laws, and practices.

Complete 135 hours of real estate education. Pass the California Salesperson licensing exam. Complete a background check. Apply online for a Salesperson license with the California Department of Real Estate (DRE). Out-of-state residents must file a Consent to Service of Process (RE 234) with the California Department of Real Estate.
Examination applications can be submitted online through eLicensing or by mail. Note: You may not apply to take the examination if you have a license that can still be renewed (see License Renewal).
