KSDS is a short form of Key Sequential Data Set. KSDS is very commonly used dataset among all types of VSAM datasets. KSDS datasets have the most similar features as ISAM and contain DATA and INDEX components. The DATA component has all the data records in a logical ascending order based on the key.

CICS® supports access to the following types of data set: key-sequenced data set (KSDS), entry-sequenced data set (ESDS), and relative record data set (RRDS) (both fixed and variable record lengths). VSAM data sets are held on direct-access storage devices (DASD) auxiliary storage.
KSDS is known as Key Sequenced Data Set. A key-sequenced data set (KSDS) is more complex than ESDS and RRDS but is more useful and versatile. We must code INDEXED inside the DEFINE CLUSTER command for KSDS datasets. KSDS cluster consists of following two components −
