In an attempt to understand and explain first language (L1) acquisition and second language (L2) acquisition scholars have put forward many theories. These theories can aid language teachers to understand language learning and to assist their students in their language learning process.
This paper reviews a broad spectrum of literature in uncovering the similarities and differences between L1 and L2 language acquisition. Three theories of L1 acquisition in children (Behaviorist, Nativist, and Developmental) are examined.
14 Ιουλ 2020 · There are differences between acquiring an L1 and learning a non-native language (L2, L3, etc.). These differences are related to age of acquisition and context of learning, metalinguistic knowledge and awareness, formal learning situations, among others.
In fact, comparisons between L1 and L2 are possible in four ways, if distinctions are drawn between adults and children, i.e. in the following way: Child L1 vs. Adult L1, Child L1 vs. Adult L2 (which is the main comparison predominately examined in this essay), Child L2 vs. Child L1 and Child L2 vs. Adult L2.

This ability to learn a language, whether it be the first or the second, is a distinct human capacity. How this learning occurs is not well understood, although, in general, we know more about first language (L1) acquisition than we do about second language (L2) acquisition.
