Mast cell tumors (MCT) are the most common cutaneous tumor in dogs, accounting for 16 to 21% of skin tumors. Early detection and aspirates before surgical removal are important for successful outcomes.
1 Απρ 2005 · For dogs with locally confined tumors (stage 0 to 1), the treatment of grade I or II mast cell tumors should include surgery alone or surgery in combination with curative-intent radiation therapy.
The treatment of choice for multiple low-grade mast cell tumours (MCTs) in dogs is surgery. Managing multiple MCT surgeries can be challenging and distressing for both owners and veterinarians. I've encountered cases where a single dog underwent up to 35 MCT removals in one surgery and over 50 throughout its lifetime.
Surgical excision is the treatment of choice for mast cell tumors and may be curative in dogs with low-grade completely excised tumors. A second surgery or radiation therapy may be needed in cases where the surgical margins are not clean according to the histopathology report.
