In 1972, after a violent confrontation with his abusive father, Miklo Velka, a teenager of half-Mexican descent, leaves Las Vegas for East Los Angeles. He moves in with his cousins, Paco and Cruz, who are members of the Vatos Locos gang.
Depicting a Mexican Mafia lord and his rise to power from within prison, the film eschews Coppola's nostalgic romanticization of gangsters in the Godfather films and Scorsese's sleek embellishments in his mob films.

From Heli (2013) to Sicario (2015), I have found that Mexican gang movies shed light on complex social issues like poverty, inequality, drugs, and violence.
