In Spain, Holy Week is called “Semana Santa.” It’s celebrated with unrivalled pageantry and emotion — most famously in Seville (or “Sevilla”). Here, Semana Santa is an epic event that stirs the soul and captivates all who participate.
The Holy Week, also known as Semana Santa, is a deeply rooted tradition observed from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday in Seville, Spain. During these seven days, people from all over the world join the brotherhoods (hermandades and cofradias) in austerity, fervor, and enthusiasm.
Spain takes Semana Santa (or Holy Week) seriously, as a time to remember the Passion of the Christ with religious events. In Valencia too, you will find Mass services and processions by the seaside, but also plenty of colour, laughter, good food and, of course, fireworks.
Easter Week is Seville's main fiesta. It's a celebration which reaches levels of aesthetic and spiritual intensity that make it unique among all Easter Week celebrations. From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, nearly sixty confraternities take to the streets to bring the Passion and Death of Christ to life.
