Map of the shipwrecks in the Great Storm of 1913. The Great Lakes, a collection of five freshwater lakes located in North America, have been sailed upon since at least the 17th century, and thousands of ships have been sunk while traversing them.
The proposed Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary includes 43 known shipwrecks and one aircraft. Based on historical records, an additional 20 shipwrecks, three aircraft, and several other underwater archaeological sites may be located there.
These shipwrecks can be found across all five Great Lakes, including many in eastern Lake Ontario near Kingston. Select a nautical chart to discover the wrecks. Click on one of the link to learn about the lakes and their famous shipwrecks.

Visualizing the depth of the Great Lakes shows that a majority of the wrecks occur within a few miles of the shoreline with almost none occurring over the middle of lake Michigan. For the East shore of Wisconsin, a large portion of the lake shore is elevated a few hundred feet above the lake.
This interactive map is perfect for anyone interested in exploring shipwreck locations or to use to find scuba diving sites. The filters allow for narrowing the results by the type of ship, what caused the ship to sink, and lake and the year that it sunk.
28 Μαρ 2023 · This map shows hot spots of the wrecks in the Great Lakes. The worst areas concerning shipwrecks are Whitefish Bay, Thunder Bay, and the east side of Lake Michigan. A commonality between all these areas is that they all have little natural protection from storms and other natural disasters.
