Lake Superior empties into Lake Huron via the St. Marys River and the Soo Locks (Sault Ste. Marie locks). Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by area and the third largest in volume, behind Lake Baikal in Siberia and Lake Tanganyika in East Africa.

The most important clue we have is that here on the south shore of Lake Superior all the lava layers are dipping to the north under the lake. On the north side of the lake, for example at Isle Royale National Park, all the layers are dipping the other way, south, under the lake.
