Access the trail from 53 trailhead park-ing lots every 3–11 miles. The trail is narrow with roots and rocks. Wear sturdy footwear and allow one hour for every one to two miles hiked. Bring water, rainwear, snacks, insect repellant, and a warm layer. Always carry a map when you hike. Dogs are allowed on leash only.
From Duluth to Two Harbors to Silver Bay, you’ll find six sections of the main SHT along with numerous spur trails that lead to scenic overlooks and Lake Superior. Several loop trails run through Gooseberry, Split Rock, and Tettegouche State Park.
