The exceptional difference is that smooth crabgrass is not as coarse or as tall as hairy crabgrass. It also has no hairs around the sheath, and neither are the hairs present on the leaves. Smooth crabgrass is also more reddish and sometimes appears purple.
12 Δεκ 2022 · Both crabgrass species have a short (1 to 1.5 mm) membranous ligule. The ligule of large crabgrass is somewhat jagged at the tip, whereas the ligule of smooth crabgrass is not jagged. Both species lack auricles in the collar region (located at the junction of the leaf blade and sheath).
Large Crabgrass. Large or hairy crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis) has dense hair growth covering its leaves and sheaths. The leaves are short, broad and tapered. Large crabgrass prefers warm temperatures and can also withstand droughts.
Smooth crabgrass, characterized by its smooth, hairless leaves and stems, typically grows close to the ground and can reach heights of up to 6 inches if unmowed. In contrast, large crabgrass, also known as hairy crabgrass, can grow up to 2 feet tall and has distinctive hairy leaves and stems.
On smooth crabgrass, few long, sparse hairs are present at the base of the leaf blade on the upper surface, and plants are generally smaller than those of large crabgrass. Large crabgrass (sometimes referred to as hairy crabgrass) has long sparse hairs on both the upper and lower leaf blade surfaces and on the leaf sheaths.

26 Μαρ 2013 · If you look close at large crabgrass (also sometimes called hairy crabgrass) you will see hairs on the leaves (blade and sheath) and a membranous ligule. If the leaf sheath and upper leaf blade are mostly smooth (hairless) then you likely have smooth crabgrass.
