12 Δεκ 2022 · Both crabgrass species have a short (1 to 1.5 mm) membranous ligule. The ligule of large crabgrass is somewhat jagged at the tip, whereas the ligule of smooth crabgrass is not jagged. Both species lack auricles in the collar region (located at the junction of the leaf blade and sheath).
The exceptional difference is that smooth crabgrass is not as coarse or as tall as hairy crabgrass. It also has no hairs around the sheath, and neither are the hairs present on the leaves. Smooth crabgrass is also more reddish and sometimes appears purple.

26 Μαρ 2013 · If you look close at large crabgrass (also sometimes called hairy crabgrass) you will see hairs on the leaves (blade and sheath) and a membranous ligule. If the leaf sheath and upper leaf blade are mostly smooth (hairless) then you likely have smooth crabgrass.

Smooth crabgrass usually grows near the edges of lawns and forms a clump with blades close to the ground. It has distinct, thin seed heads that usually extend beyond the leaves but remain close to the ground.
Large crabgrass grows up to 3 feet tall, while smooth crabgrass typically only grows up to 1 foot. Crabgrass contains a hairy ligule (collar-shaped growth) between the sheath and grass blade. Crabgrass blades are between 1 and 6 inches long and light green. Young large crabgrass blades have small hairs, although older leaves may become hairless.
