Tsunami Inundation Mapping. Coastal Alaska lives with the most serious tsunami risk in the United States. Historically, tsunamis generated by earthquakes in Alaska have caused damage and loss of life along Alaska coastlines, the West Coast of the contiguous United States and across the Pacific.
Actual conditions during a tsunami may vary; areas inundated will depend on earthquake-triggered landslides, on-land constructions, tide level, local ground subsidence, and may differ from areas shown on map. Information on this map is intended to permit state and local agencies to plan emergency evacuation and tsunami response actions.
“worst case” tsunami-inundation for both Karluk and Larsen Bay. The maximum predicted overland flow depth ranges from 5 to 10 m (17 to 33 ft) in Karluk and from 10 to 15 m (33
Actual conditions during a tsunami (e.g., style of earthquake, triggered landslides, on-land construction, tide level, local ground subsidence) may cause impacts that vary considerably from what is shown on the maps.
These have produced some of the largest tsunami waves recorded and, unlike earthquake-induced tsunamis, they can strike with no warning. The tsunami travel time maps for various historical events can be accessed here.
16 Αυγ 2023 · Alaska researchers say most of Anchorage is safe from the threat of a tsunami, but they warn that such a wave could affect Girdwood, Hope and some other coastal areas, including the Port of...
In addition to increasing the accuracy of tsunami hazards assessments along the Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone, the findings highlight an important discovery: whether a subduction megathrust is locked or creeping today may not necessarily reflect its potential to generate large tsunamis.
