The larynx is a cartilaginous structure involved in passing air to and from the trachea. The epiglottis closes during swallowing to prevent ingested materials from passing to the trachea. The true vocal cords within the glottis of the larynx function in the production of sound.
30 Οκτ 2023 · The upper respiratory tract includes the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, pharynx and the portion of the larynx above the vocal cords. The lower respiratory tract includes the larynx below the vocal cords, the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and the lungs.
The larynx connects the lower part of the pharynx, the laryngopharynx, to the trachea. It keeps the air passages open during breathing and digestion and is the key organ for producing sound. This larynx is comprised of nine cartilages.
The larynx is located in the anterior neck at the level of the bodies of the C3 to C6 vertebrae and connects the inferior part of the pharynx with the trachea. It also contains the vocal cords , or vocal folds , so it’s responsible for voice production.
The larynx connects the pharynx and trachea and helps to conduct air through the respiratory tract. The larynx is also called the voice box because it contains the vocal cords, which vibrate when air flows over them, thereby producing sound.
