The San Francisco riot of 1877 was a three-day pogrom waged against Chinese immigrants in San Francisco, California by the city's majority Irish population from the evening of July 23 through the night of July 25, 1877.
During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, San Francisco's Chinatown served as home for Chinese immigrants and Chinese Americans for over 150 years. San Francisco's Chinatown sprang up in large part because of anti-Chinese racism and legal barriers that prevented assimilation.
