4 Οκτ 2016 · The Hutchinsons, along with another family, hunkered down in a log hut not far from where the cow waddled ashore and became the first settlers to winter in Norwich, a stone’s throw from today’s Ledyard Bridge.
In 1935 a new bridge to Hanover, the Ledyard bridge, was being constructed. The temporary bridge was a pile bridge about 15 feet above the water. The spring high water took out about 75 feet of the bridge and they stretched a wire rope sidewalk over that gap for pedestrians.

Built in 1859, the covered bridge which links Hanover and Norwich on opposite sides of the Connecticut has survived most of its contemporaries and now stands as one of the few remaining examples, and one of the longest, of the roofed bridges which dotted New England years ago.
