The Genesis of Justice argues that the Bible "as contrasted with earlier legal codes ... is a law book explicitly rooted in the narrative of experience" (6), that it is the very social injustices in Genesis that provoke its readers to recognize the need for justice.
The opening chapters of the book deal with the nature and sources of Biblical law, and the concept of justice. The following chapters deal with particular issues in Biblical law, such as environmental law, property law, social welfare, homicide, theft and burglary, marriage and divorce, and sexual offences.

The biblical concept of righteousness and law is based on the conviction that God is the righteous judge whose judges the earth with his impartiality and bestows his own righteousness to those who live in accordance with his will and commandments.
This article draws upon Robert Alter’s insights into biblical narrative to challenge the strict dichotomies between “law” and “narrative” in the Hebrew Bible, demonstrating that both genres share many rhetorical techniques, and providing a template of narrative vision and legal praxis intertwined.
