This chapter will provide foundational legal knowledge for nursing practice in complex health care environments. Nurses are responsible for being aware of the laws and regulations affecting their nursing care in the state(s) in which they are practicing.

Most adults have the legal right to make their own health care decisions. However, poor health can jeopardize people’s ability to exercise their legal rights. Safeguarding these rights requires advance thinking and planning.
