Political tensions between the northern and southern Carolina regions played a large role in the colony's official split. Fairly quickly, the regions developed distinct economies, governing structures, and social classes, which created friction between the colonists.

This project will focus on three interest locations and how the border line has moved in those areas. The maps for this project were all from the USGS Historical Topographic Maps digital tool.
North and South Carolina became separate colonies in 1712. Each of the colonies prospered on its own after the peaceful split and managed its affairs without depending on the other. The fertility of the Low Country and several harbors facilitated the prosperity of the South.

The distance between the settlements in the northern part and South Carolina’s Charles Town played a role in the decision to split.
12 Νοε 2021 · By the beginning of the 18th century, calls to make the split between North and South Carolina more formal escalated, and in 1712 the Carolinas officially became two distinct colonies — a peaceful split brought about by the ample size of the land and considerable differences between the two halves.
