Elements of the approach are still seen today in ethnoecology, political ecology, human behavioral ecology, and the ecosystems approach (Tucker 2013).
Dr. White's recent theoretical writings3 indicate that both a comprehensive doctrine of culture and a group of adherents con- stituting practically a Whitean school have emerged.
Leslie White (1900 – 1975) was concerned with ecological anthropology and energy capture as a measure by which to define the complexity of a culture. He was heavily influenced by Marxian economic theory as well as Darwinian evolutionary theory.
White went to Michigan when he was hired to replace Julian Steward, who departed Ann Arbor in 1930. Although the university was home to a museum with a long history of involvement in matters anthropological, White was the only professor in the anthropology department itself.
