Lexington was the finest racehorse of his day and his prowess as a stallion is unmatched in American history as the sport’s leading sire a record 16 years. A bay colt bred by Dr. Elisha Warfield, Lexington was a son of Hall of Famer Boston out of the Sarpedon mare Alice Carneal.
Lexington (March 17, 1850 – July 1, 1875) was a United States Thoroughbred race horse who won six of his seven race starts. Perhaps his greatest fame, however, came as the most successful sire of the second half of the nineteenth century; he was the leading sire in North America 16 times, and broodmare sire of many notable racehorses.

Lexington wasn’t just the center of the racing and breeding worlds, though—it was also the center of the equine sales industry.

On the morning of March 17, 1850, Dr. Elisha Warfield was summoned to his barn at The Meadows farm (once located within the city limits of Lexington) to see a new foal. Darley was the name originally given by Warfield to the bay colt by Boston out of his top racemare Alice Carneal.
Kentucky has long been associated with horse racing in the United States, and the city of Lexington and the farms surrounding it have produced some of the most well known thoroughbreds in the history of the sport. One horse that brought prominence to the area was named for the city.
