The new instrument, containing 51 major life events, was administered to a national sample of 5000. Respondents were asked to rate the stressfulness of each life event on a 1-100 scale. Completed surveys were returned by 3122 individuals (62.4%).

The purpose of the present chapter is to provide an overview of key issues involving the definition and assessment of major life events for researchers interested in the effects of life stress on a wide range of disorders.
If reconciled with the life-event approach, the social action paradigm can uncover meaning processes which lie behind successful psychological coping with a life event. In a first step of analysis, therefore, the social-action paradigm can elucidate coping processes on an individual-centred level.
