The new instrument, containing 51 major life events, was administered to a national sample of 5000. Respondents were asked to rate the stressfulness of each life event on a 1-100 scale. Completed surveys were returned by 3122 individuals (62.4%).
Life Events-the Social Stressors. Probably the most dominant theoretical formu- lation in the social etiology of distress has been the stress-distress model. Physiologist Hans Selye (1956) proposed the theory that diverse external stimuli might generate undif- ferentiated physiological and mental re- sponses.
It has been hypothesized that exposure to stress and negative life events is related to poor health outcomes, and that differential exposure to stress plays a role in socioeconomic disparities in health.
This paper presents a critical overview of current concepts and analytic practices in stress research and considers how they can be changed to make the research more consistent with core sociological interests.
Stressful life events, or life event stressors, are undesirable, unscheduled, nonnormative, and/or uncontrollable discrete, observable events with a generally clear onset and offset that usually signify major life changes.
The basic paradigm of life-event research relates the incidence of stressful life-change ('life events') to the onset of illness. A causal relationship between life-events and illness is postulated.
