A tube feed provides all nutritional needs to meet recommended caloric needs calculated by a registered dietitian.
19.3% of residents who had feeding tube placement needed tube replacement or repositioning within 145 days after insertion, and the median survival was 54 days after replacement; also, one-year mortality after feeding tube insertion was 64.1% with a median survival of 56 days after insertion
Although the duration of tube feeding ranged from 1 month to 8 years, they were able to follow 56 patients for 11 months. Indications for EN were refusal to swallow due to cognitive dysfunction, such as dementia (50%), dysphagia without obstruction (47%), and esophageal obstruction (3%).
