It's a biblical reference because the anime is trying to portary Light as a devilish character and L as a Jesus figure. It's a symbol of "loving your enemies" and also a sign that death is coming for L and that Light will become the new L.

The biggest difference was that Light did seem to miss L after killing him in (moreso as a rival) both but in the anime, he outright haullucinates L talking to him, more heavily suggesting it.
