This manual is written for construction contractors developing project bids, planning jobs, and conducting construction activities; for engineers preparing lime stabilization construction specifications; for project inspectors; and for civil engineering students.
Objectives. Evaluate soil acidity on 100 soils from across the Central and Northern California, with emphasis on tree and vine crops. Evaluate six buffer pH methods cited in the literature on California soils. Evaluate lime equilibration models based on soil buffer pH.
The procedures outlined in this document can be used to determine whether a soil can be stabilized with lime and, if so, to quantify the minimum amount of lime required to produce long-term strength, durability, and the other desired properties of a lime-stabilized soil.
Lime Treatment in HMA : Lime used for soil stabilization (Section 24-2) or aggregate lime treatment (Section 39-2) in hot mix asphalt (HMA) must Caltrans authorized producer and plant listed on the Authorized Material Lists (AML).

Lime stabilization is effective for basement material containing a large percentage of clay particles. The lime stabilization process includes spreading lime over the basement material, thoroughly mixing it in place, compacting it at an appropriate moisture content, and curing.
