Learning the Poetic Line. How line breaks shape meaning. BY REBECCA HAZELTON. If you want to understand poetry, and maybe learn how to write it, you definitely want to learn about the different kinds of poetic lines and the uses of line breaks in poetry.
Each line of a poem will have its own structure, and the meter is the rhythm and sound pattern of a line of poetry. The rhythm is important as it gives the poem its sound and differentiates it from prose.
What you decide regarding the qualities important to the lines of your poems will determine how the lines relate to one another, how the stanzas fit together and what the entire form of the poem will be.
Poetry is divided into lines, or groups of words. Lines are organized in units of meaning called stanzas. The lines in a stanza work together to express one key idea. A blank line, called a stanza break, signals that one stanza has ended and a new stanza is beginning. Lines and Stanzas - Example.
Poems that rhyme without any regular pattern can be called rhyming poems, but only those poems with an unvarying pattern to their rhymes can be said to have a rhyme scheme.

Poetry is organized by the division of each line into “feet,” metric units which each consist of a particular arrangement of strong and weak stresses. The most common metric unit is the iambic, in which an unstressed syllable is followed by a stressed one (as in the words reverse and compose).
