It is possible to calibrate Joysticks in Kubuntu using KDE's system settings. This is a bit of an "overkill" solution, as of course it requires KDE (and most Ubuntu users will not want this). I did not have my joystick plugged in for the above screenshot, but I have tried it before and it works.

Joymap helps you to configure a joystick or joypad on Linux to make it to work in keyboard emulation mode. Many old games available online (i.e. the ones from archive.org - MS-DOS games, Classic PC Games, SEGA games), are controlled using the keyboard.
In addition to the simple mapping of buttons and axes of a physical game controller to keyboard and mouse input, ControllerBuddy also supports feeding input commands to a virtual joystick device (vJoy / uinput).
Linux has two different input systems for gamepads – the original Joystick interface and the newer evdev-based interface. /dev/input/jsX maps to the Joystick API interface and /dev/input/event* maps to the evdev ones (this also includes other input devices such as mice and keyboards).
