Since the first living-donor kidney transplantation in 1954, more than half a million living kidney donations have occurred and research has advanced knowledge about long-term donor outcomes. Donors in developed countries have a similar life expectancy and quality of life as healthy non-donors.
Kidney transplantation from a living donor, when available, is the treatment of choice for most patients with end stage renal disease, offering optimum patient and graft survival and reduced time on the national transplant waiting list.
There has been no reported stone recurrence in any of the donors to date and no stone on ultrasonography of eight donors with >1-year follow-up (mean 26 months, range 12-49 months). Conclusions: Asymptomatic renal stones are present in 5% of our donors.
