The UNOS database revealed a lower survival rate in elderly (55%) than in younger LT recipients, 31 and data from the European Liver Transplant Registry showed higher mortality in older recipients. 32 Mortality rate in elderly population was similarly higher than in younger recipients in our data (P < 0.001, Table 2). The outcome of UNOS was ...
1 Νοε 2022 · In this meta-analysis we assessed the post liver transplantation outcomes in patients ≥70 years of age, and we report a pooled 1-year survival rate of 78.7%, 3-years survival rate of 61.2% and 5-years survival rate of 48.9%.
10 Μαΐ 2018 · Learn how long people survive after a liver transplant, what factors affect the outcome, and what to expect during and after the procedure. Find out the average survival rates by age, cause of liver failure, and donor type.
Two major concerns emerge with this group of patients: (1) whether they can undergo successful transplant without serious complications due to age and comorbid conditions and (2) whether they have survival rates equivalent to those of younger recipients.
Survival rates were 71%, 59%, and 52% for era A, 78%, 63%, and 53% for era B, and 86%, 72%, and 60% for era C, respectively (Fig. 2) (P = .0001).
The average age of liver transplant donors and recipients has increased over the years. Independent of the cause of liver disease, older candidates have more comorbidities, higher waitlist mortality and higher post-transplant mortality than younger patients.
Although long-term survival is less than satisfactory, large-scale studies show that the transplant survival benefit is similar for elderly and younger patients.
