17 Ιαν 2017 · Simple answer... when one of the rear wheels spins, the AWD kicks in. The controller (on 99-up) "compares" the front and rear drive-shaft speeds... when it sees a difference, it kicks in the AWD (engages transfer case to front drive-train).
