Tire load index tells you how much weight your tire can safely carry. During the process of switching tire sizes, try to always use tires with same or greater tire load index than the original equipment tires.
The easiest way to tell the difference between the two is that the load index is a two- or three-digit number, while the speed index is a single letter. In the example above, the load index is 87, while the speed index is S (112MPH).
Use this Tire Load Index Chart to discover the load carrying capacity of your tires, or how much weight it can support safely. Here’s an example. Let’s pretend your tire has a load index of 84.
Load index. The load index can be found on the sidewall. It corresponds to the maximum load the tyre can handle. You can compare the load index with the following table to find out the the maximum load in Kg the tyre can handle. Each tyre must have a load capacity equal or superior to half the weight borne by the axle on which it is mounted. .
