Local government in Canada can be defined as all elected local authorities which are legally empowered to make decisions on behalf of its electors, excluding the federal government, provincial and territorial governments, and First Nations, Métis and Inuit governments.

In order to offer such in-depth examination of the functioning of local governments in the Canadian federal system, the chapter presents the general architecture in which local governments have been deployed in Canada, after which it details their structure and institutions and the constitutional jurisdiction prevailing over them.
All Canadian provinces have enacted laws that provide for the existence of municipalities (in other words, corporate entities with defined territories and delegated legal authority to enact bylaws relating to a range of government functions generally considered to be local in nature).
