16 Αυγ 2018 · Demodectic mange, also called demodicosis, is caused by one of the microscopic mites of the Demodex genus. Three species of Demodex mites have been identified in dogs: Demodex canis, Demodex gatoi, and Demodex injai. The most common mite of demodectic mange is Demodex canis.
Surprisingly, a dog with demodectic mange may not itch severely, even though it loses hair in patches. The hair loss usually begins on the face, especially around the eyes. When there are only a few patches of hair loss, the condition is referred to as localized demodectic mange.
The first category of demodectic mange is hair loss in small patches most commonly located around the lips, eyes and legs. These patches may exhibit redness and scaling, and usually occur in dogs less than a year old.
Three forms of demodicosis are seen in dogs: localized demodectic mange, juvenile-onset generalized demodicosis, and adult-onset generalized demodicosis. Localized demodicosis is seen in dogs usually 1 year old, and most of these cases resolve spontaneously.
