The vehicle would have used both air breathing ram or scramjet propulsion as well as a rocket engine, carrying both RP-1 and LH2 propellant as well as on-board stores of LOX. The X-24C-L301 languished at the design phase when the X-24C project was shelved in September 1977 due a tight NASA budget.

30 Νοε 2023 · The Lockheed X-24C was a 1970s attempt to bring hypersonic speeds – or speeds above Mach 5 – to the United States Air Force via a rocket plus scramjet combo. But in the end, budget priorities shelved the X-24C.
The X-24A would soon emerge, its teardrop shape provided lift while the inclusion of three vertical fins allowed pilots to stabilize the vehicle during a rapid descent. With Gentry at the helm, the X-24A proved that an aircraft could indeed land unpowered after descending from the upper atmosphere.
