Study with Quizlet and memorize flashcards containing terms like logarithm definition, Parts of a logarithm, log of a negative number and more.
Since the natural logarithm is a base-\(e\) logarithm, \(\ln x=\log _{e} x\), all of the properties of the logarithm apply to it. We can use the properties of the logarithm to expand logarithmic expressions using sums, differences, and coefficients.
relate logarithms to exponentials; use logarithm laws to expand and condense logarithmic expressions; evaluate logarithmic functions and use technology to solve problems
Introduction to Logarithms. In its simplest form, a logarithm answers the question: How many of one number multiply together to make another number? Example: How many 2 s multiply together to make 8? Answer: 2 × 2 × 2 = 8, so we had to multiply 3 of the 2 s to get 8. So the logarithm is 3. How to Write it. We write it like this: log2(8) = 3.
Learning Objectives. In this section, you will: Use the product rule for logarithms. Use the quotient rule for logarithms. Use the power rule for logarithms. Expand logarithmic expressions. Condense logarithmic expressions. Use the change-of-base formula for logarithms.
