I have the Logitech MX Keys, which is a $100 wireless keyboard with buttons for swapping between 3 devices. If all three devices are unifying USB-A dongles then it works without issues. However, my macbook only has USB-C and I have to use a USB-C to 4port USB-A adapter to connect it.

The problem is that the USB-C receiver never arrived, and still hasn't. It is now, arguably, five years since USB-C started becoming the industry standard, replacing USB-A. It obviously isn't impossible to make USB-C unifying receivers, as demonstrated for example here.
