Uva uvam vivendo varia fit. This Latin phrase from Lonesome Dove is neither nonsense nor bad Latin. It means "A grape becomes mottled by being a grape," with the sense: it is the nature of a grape to become "mottled" as it ripens.
14 Ιαν 2009 · So... the latin on the board at Lonesome Dove reads: Uva uvam vivendo varia fit I know the correct phrase is from Juvenal, and is Uva uvam videndo varia fit: "a grape, seeing another grape, changes color"
Literally translated, it means "A grape (uva) + other grapes (uvam) + seeing (videndo) + changes (varia fit)”--"A grape changes when it sees other grapes"—or, to quote the more modern proverb of 18 th century Jamaican origin, “monkey see monkey do”.

15 Ιαν 2001 · Over the holiday I rented Lonesome Dove after reading the book, and I was struck by the quote they had on their sign in Texas, which wasn’t translated anywhere in the book. it reads: “Uva Uvam Vivendo Varia Fit”. I’m really curious what this means.
