Horsehair worms are often seen in puddles and other pools of fresh water, swimming pools, water tanks and on plants. They are especially noticeable after rainfall. Horsehair worms may be found inside homes in toilets causing people to be concerned that it is a human parasite.

However, the worm I’ve found only twice so far is not as skinny, not as long, and each time has only been about 2-3″ long. Very squirmy, and never in the toilet, always on the floor.

A reader wrote to us recently about the hundreds of skinny worms that appear on her back patio after it rains. The worms are a little over an inch long (about three centimeters), and they are coming from planter boxes nearby.
Horsehair worms, or gordian worms, are harmless to plants, people, and pets. These long, slender parasitic roundworms play a beneficial role by infecting and killing a small percentage of crickets and grasshoppers.
Horsehair worms are most commonly seen following rains in November and early December in Oklahoma. They have also been collected in the late winter and early spring (mid-January to March). These worms are sometimes seen after crushing pests that have invaded the house.
28 Αυγ 2020 · After a heavy rain, hundreds of small worms climb the brick wall On the north side of our house and onto our front porch. Mine is the only house in our neighborhood so effected. We mulch annually, so lots of organic matter available.
