Longitudinal waves are the mechanical waves in which the vibration of the particles takes place in the same direction as that of the wave. Sound waves, seismic waves are the examples of longitudinal waves.

Transverse waves show areas of peaks and troughs. Examples of transverse waves include: Electromagnetic waves e.g. radio, visible light, UV. Vibrations on a guitar string. Transverse waves do not need particles to propagate, and so they can travel through a vacuum.
The diagram below shows the green wave leads the purple wave by ¼ λ. Two waves ¼ λ out of phase. In contrast, the purple wave is said to lag behind the green wave by ¼ λ. Phase difference is measured in fractions of a wavelength, degrees or radians.
