Lost River State Park is a state park located in Hardy County, West Virginia near the community of Mathias. The park encompasses 3,712 acres (15.02 km 2) managed by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
Located in the wooded mountains of Hardy County in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle, Lost River State Park provides cabin lodging and an abundance of outdoor recreation. The park’s quiet 3,934 acres of woods provides a secluded getaway for nature lovers.
Unparalleled views. A beacon for outdoor lovers, Lost River boasts 23 miles of hiking trails as well as guided horseback rides. But the centerpiece of this park is the Cranny Crow overlook that sits at 3,200 feet atop Big Ridge Mountain, where on a clear day visitors can see into five counties.
The 31.1-mile Lost River -- essentially the upper course of the Cacapon River -- drains part of southern Hardy County in eastern West Virginia. The river flows into an underground channel southwest of Wardensville, at "The Sinks," and reappears as the Cacapon River.
The Lost River is geologically the same river as the Cacapon River: It flows into an underground channel northeast of McCauley along West Virginia Route 259 at "the Sinks" and reappears near Wardensville as the Cacapon.
