I'm applying the stain/poly with a 3"/4" foam brush. I've tried a Purdy one, but feel I get better results with the foam one. It's really tough to get a thin even coat on.
Polyshades is not the best, but it's good in a pinch. I definitely wouldn't use it to achieve a dark stain. You also have to be very VERY diligent with sanding because the tinted poly fills in any minute scratches left from the coarse or medium grits. I learned that the hard way.
