All resources/videos I see online talk about how to apply GF or Minwax, and not much actually talks about the proper method to apply a stain and poly in one. Here are some details: I used the Behr water based wood conditioner.

I prefer to do the stain and finish separate. As for poly, wipe-on is more foolproof but it takes more coats to achieve the finish. Oil-based will yellow a bit over time. Water-based is crystal clear, but generally a little less durable than oil-based and usually takes more coats.
