1 Απρ 2003 · In April 2003 the University Library of the University of Rhode Island presented an exhibition entitled Rhode Island Lotteries – Three Centuries of History. The exhibition was a comprehensive look at the role of lotteries in Rhode Island as well as a study of the evolution of the role of lotteries over a period spanning three hundred years.
Beyond the traditional lottery ticket, the Rhode Island Lottery introduced Keno drawings on September 13, 1992; six days later the first Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs) were put into use at the state’s two pari-mutuel venues, Lincoln Park (Twin River Casino) and Newport Jai Alai (now Newport Grand).
1 Οκτ 2002 · Abstract. This document contains a list of lotteries that took place in Rhode Island between 1744 and 1839. It includes the year and month the General Assembly made the grant, the amount of the initial grant, and an abbreviated description of the purpose of the lottery.
The Rhode Island General Assembly, at its January 1732 session passed a law to prohibit the practice of lotteries. Just 12 years latter, the General Assembly reversed itself and authorized a lottery for the construction of Weybosett Bridge in Providence.
University of Rhode Island’s Library, documents the role that lotteries played in Rhode Island’s history. The exhibit and this companion publication illustrate the surprising and colorful ways lotteries have been used over the last three centuries to support public activities in Rhode Island.
History. Lotteries played an important role in Rhode Island from the colonial period until the mid-19th Century. They were banned by the colonial legislature in 1732, only to be brought back in 1744. They continued, generally under control of the Rhode Island General Assembly, until being banned again in 1842.
The exhibit and this companion publication illustrate the surprising and colorful ways lotteries have been used over the last three centuries to support public activities in Rhode Island.
