LSP Cadet Training. The Louisiana State Police Training Academy maintains a training program to train our future Troopers to have self-discipline, technical competence, empathy, physical well-being, and emotional intelligence.

All of our Cadet Classes are conducted at our Training Academy in Baton Rouge, LA. The LSP Training Academy is a residential academy with cadets required to stay at the academy Sunday-Friday of each week. Becoming a Louisiana State Trooper is a long, arduous process. Only a small number who apply are ultimately accepted after successfully passing a written exam, an oral interview, and an in-depth background check. The Louisiana State Police Academy is the starting point for all new Troopers.
The cadet exam is offered on a daily basis in Baton Rouge, LA; however, the State Police Commission is now offering the option of scheduling through an online proctoring service in an effort to allow greater flexibility for testers.
There are 27 basic training academies for peace officers in the state of Louisiana that are approved by the POST Council. The only way to attend one of these academies is to first be hired by a police department or sheriff’s office in the state.
