17 Φεβ 2023 · To identify the most affordable states, Stacker used data from the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) to determine the 25 states with the lowest cost of living as of the second quarter of 2024. Each state's cost of living index was calculated based on the prices of 60 goods and services from a voluntary survey.
Iowa has the United State's eighth-lowest cost of living, with costs in all categories below the national average. Housing in Iowa is the sixth cheapest in the nation, with an index of 76. The median price of a single-family home is $165,955.
Various states in the southern and mid-west regions, including Mississippi (85), Oklahoma (85.8), and Kansas (87.5), are noted for lower costs of living.
