Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (3 November AD 39 – 30 April AD 65), better known in English as Lucan (/ ˈ l uː k ən /), was a Roman poet, born in Corduba, Hispania Baetica (present-day Córdoba, Spain). He is regarded as one of the outstanding figures of the Imperial Latin period, known in particular for his epic Pharsalia .

Lucan (M. Annaeus Lucanus, 39–65 CE), son of wealthy M. Annaeus Mela and nephew of Seneca, was born at Corduba (Cordova) in Spain and was brought as a baby to Rome. In 60 CE at a festival in Emperor Nero's honour Lucan praised him in a panegyric and was promoted to one or two minor offices.
Enter full screen mode. he won a high reputation among his own countrymen; and Statius and Martial, writing long after his death, do not scruple to name him as the writer of Latin epic poetry who comes nearest to Virgil. In modern times also great writers have admired Lucan’s poem.
Thus, Lucan grants supernatural proportions to the character of Caesar only in order to strike him down most vehemently at the end: even the ultimate maker of nefas must eventually crash down upon himself. So does also Lucan's poem, an inmensum opus subject to the very destiny of his protagonists.
