This article is about the Roman poet. For other uses, see Lucan (disambiguation). Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (3 November AD 39 – 30 April AD 65), better known in English as Lucan (/ ˈluːkən /), was a Roman poet, born in Corduba, Hispania Baetica (present-day Córdoba, Spain).
Lucan has a genius for capturing the moods and faces of the civil wars in brief, colorful sketches of some of its less famous participants. Some are not even names, but merely voices: an old woman lamenting for her sons, an old man recalling the terrible days of Marius and Sulla.
His epic poem “Pharsalia,” detailing the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey, remains a significant work in classical literature. In more modern history, the name is associated with John Bingham, 7th Earl of Lucan, a British peer known for his mysterious disappearance that has intrigued the public and media for decades.
