The group took its name from Lucy Stone (1818–1893), the first married woman in the United States to carry her birth name through life (she married in 1855). The New York Times called the group the "Maiden Namers".
She also set a new standard by retaining her maiden name. While living in New Jersey, Stone gave birth to two children, though the second one did not survive. Daughter Alice Stone Blackwell became a feminist and abolitionist, working alongside her parents.
Lucy Stone's refusal to take her husband's name, as an assertion of her own rights, was controversial, then, and it is largely what she is remembered for, today. Women who continue to use their maiden name, after marriage, are still occasionally known as "Lucy Stoners," in the United States. [5]

This skilled orator, abolitionist, and suffragist also became the first women to earn a college degree in Massachusetts.
Stone retained her maiden name, a decision which often proved controversial and left an ongoing legacy. [8] After the birth of her daughter Alice in 1857, Stone took a brief hiatus from her active role in the women's rights movement, returning with all of her previous vigor less than a year later at a time when women rarely worked outside the home.
